I find this similar to those folks who have "inspirational quotes" under their email signatures.

While I have absolutely nothing against quotes (I actually collect quotes myself) I am a firm, and perhaps traditionalist, believer in the idea that your business email signature, and any required out of office notifications should be simple, brief and professional.

I think that it may water-down your perceived professionalism and authority to position yourself as "cute" or "clever" or to offer more information about your personal beliefs and opinions than is either necessary or appropriate.

Particularly given you never know for certain who may send you email at work, why not err on the side of caution and stick with the professional approach especially with something "blanket" like an auto-reply?

You can always be cute or clever in an individual email to a specific person.

Right on, Kristen. Not everything we do needs to communicate our terminal uniqueness, or as my dad would say--are you reading, Dad?--"there will never be another me."
