This is what happens a month after Seth Godin notices your blog

Close Boots readers will recall that a little more than a month ago Seth Godin linked to a blog item of mine and sent my readership through the roof, from the daily hundreds well into the thousands, where they remained—briefly—before plummeting back into the hundreds. It's hard to tell it from this graph, but thanks to that episode I've retained about 100 more daily visits than I had before.

I'm working on a plan that I hope will boost the readership again without Waiting for Godin. I'll let you know how, or if, it works. Why? Because as modern communicators we're all in this fucked-up build-your-readership-yourself game together.

Is it more important to have a lot of fickle followers or a smaller group of dedicated followers? Are those of us who read and contribute to your blog a part of a community? Or do you prefer us as readers, like you get if you publish in a magazine or the newspaper? What is your goal for this blog, David?

Well, I already have a band of dedicated readers, which as you know sustains me in a hundred ways.

If I can grow the size of the community without changing the nature of our discussions here--yes, I'd like to do that.

I do feel these days like we're all becoming misers, counting our Facebook friends, LinkedIn connections, Twitter followers and blog viewers as if they're money, or insurance against ... what?

Nevertheless, I'm a writer, and as newspapers and other print media go away, I do feel compelled build my own audience--and though I write for Huffington Post and magazines, etc., this blog is my daily platform. I'm not happy about it, but I'm compelled to build up the following.

And that, my friends, is the LAST thing I'll say about this blog's readership for a year or more.

Like money, this is tawdry to talk about.

I have a story that reflects what you're saying, DAvid. My husband Craig always compares my number of Facebook friends to his and is ticked when mine's higher. About 3 months ago he asked, "Who is Anne King?" I said, "She's my cousin, why?" He said, "She's requesting me on FB." I said, "oh, you don't need to accept her, you don't even know her."

He sat there a minute, then clicked ACCEPT. Then he turned to me, shrugged his shoulders and said, "I need the numbers."

I don't have this "numbers" thing - I must be odd (well, actually I KNOW I'm odd - Eileen says so) because I DON'T want people I don't know on either my Facebook or any other social media sites.

It feels kind of creepy to me to think that people I don't know and who really don't know me, are looking at my photos, or reading my notes. That stuff is for people who really know me, and who understand that although I'm a weirdo, I'm a harmless and lovable weirdo. Know what I mean??

And, just for the record, I actually started following Godin's blog, because you mentioned it here!
