David, you may be interested in this post despite the fact it is three years old: http://rainbows.typepad.com/blog/2007/01/year_after_year.html. It is my case against traditional SOTU speeches, and in favor of a written report accompanied by a speech that focuses on one particular issue, maybe two at the most. It sounds as if BHO intends to use a format of this type in the SOTU speech tonight.

Tom, thanks for that. Yes, I've believed this for years. What I'll be most curious about tonight is President Obama's ability to pull it off in the face of 1,000 pressures in the opposite direction. Let's watch together!

For those who may like to take a look at the script before the curtain rises and the show begins, National Journal has posted what looks to be the full text of tonight's SotU at http://nationaljournal.com/whitehouse/exclusive-obama-to-declare-the-rules-have-changed--20110125.
