The boy is somehow detached politically, although attached emotionally to the young couple. We can perhaps do the same, but only if we have the patience to be-friend the idiots that we disagree with politically. This seems to be getting harder.

You have to choose your idiots wisely, I agree. Like, find people who are intelligent in charming ways despite their imbecilic politics--and try to figure out how they got there from here.
