This is a both/and proposition. When I was in high school, on the Evanston HS quiz team, we were hosted by the people in Hillsboro, Illinois and I remember some great conversations about politics and religion that we never had in Evanston. Then, between my junior and senior years, I went to a kibbutz on the West Bank. And I remember some great conversations about religion and politics there. Neither stopped me from becoming a liberal Democrat and a supporter of a two-state solution. But I did pick up some empathy.

Yep, all true, Mike. But how am I going to afford to send her to Kunming AND Kankakee?
