A while back, I returned from an off-the-grid vacation to about 700 emails. When I complained to a friend about the backlog he advised me to delete them all. "If it's important, they'll be back to you," he said. It worked, and don't recall a single person getting back to me.

Thanks to this post, I will now tell people of my plans to delete their messages on my return. I'm all about transparency.

Here's one for you, Bill:

"I'm on a snowshoeing trip, and I have tenure. Write me back after the thaw."
