Thank you for this post. Mencken is an absolute delight on the subject of blather passing for rhetoric!

Just as great, however, is the enactment of such meaninglessness: Charlie Chaplin speaking nonsense German with complete conviction in The Great Dictator.

Makes me laugh myself silly every time, even as Chaplin conveys an additional point: that sound without sense is the province of the demagogue and truly dangerous.
